My First Blog!
November 12, 2012
ok, I don’t know if this is blogging, because I’ve never done it. I know it was very popular in the Julie/Julia movie, so I’m going to give it a shot. My name is Beth Mann, and I’m the President of the delightful Board of FLOC. I thought I’d share with those of you interested a little bit, well, maybe a lot of bit- it depends on how fun this turns out to be… about the beginnings of FLOC on my watch, and about where we are today…in little segments, each day or maybe each decade… We’ll see how that works out. I’m a child therapist. When my children were 8,5 and 2 I was working VERY part time- VERY. I went to pick up our children at the sitters, and my eight year old looked at me and said, “you know, mom, I’m so glad you help children that are sad. When I grow up I’ll go see a therapist because I was sad that you weren’t always home when I was a kid.” Smart kid. I quit the next day. Done. I became the home room mom, the reader of the week, the unique seamstress at Halloween (ok, I just put that in there to see if my kids are reading this… my kids had the plastic glued faces of the day, and a cloth bag- if they were lucky). Anyway, I was THERE. My children’s friends were a joy, and we lived life large and largely loved. Then, my children had the outrageous nerve to grow up. And move to fancy shmancy locations all around the world. When our youngest, Maria, decided it was time for her become an adult and learn new things away from our home, I looked at Doug and said, you know, what am I going to do? I LOVED my children’s childhoods, and they were done. I did not want my daughter’s legacy to be that of watching a little (not very honestly) blond mother become a thrashing crazy blob of traumatic sadness- seeking comfort by day with her new 200 best friend cats. And Doug said, call FLOC. Your kids have been advertising for FLOC for over 17 years. That’s how I started.
